Current research on obesity presents staggering statistics that tell us clearly that we are not living correctly. We, and our children are suffering with record-high rates of obesity diseases and the numbers continue to grow every year exponentially. The hospital costs associated with obesity in children and obesity in teens rose by more than 300% from 1979 to 1999 from $35 million annually to over $127 million. It is also a fact that those children who are not covered with health insurance to go to the doctors with are more likely by far to be obese and/or overweight than those who are covered with insurance.
What went wrong?
Just a couple of decades ago, a lot of things were done differently. People lived more holistically-healthy lifestyles in general. Here are a few examples:
- Parents used to take the time necessary to plan and subsequently prepare wholesome meals at home. Then, they used to sit down and talk with their children as they ate
- Microwavable and processed/prepared foods were not so hugely popular as they are today
- Fast foods restaurants were looked upon as rare “treatsâ€, not as dietary staple providers
- Remember gym class? Now, Illinois is the ONLY state to still have a statewide physical education requirement
- At home, people did more than watch television, play video games and surf the Internet. They actually stood up and moved around.
Causes of obesity:
In general, obesity in America is at an epidemic level, and raising every day, because the people have stopped caring about nutrition and exercise. These are not concepts that can be opted out of. Parents and household leaders need to ensure the following:
- A solid family nutrition program based as follows
- The same healthful diet for all household members consisting of whole grain foods, produce, beans, legumes, seeds, sprouts, nuts, fish and water as the primary constituents
- Acknowledgement of the fact that it is up to adults to ensure the proper nutrition for children. Kids are not to determine their own food intake choices
- Fast food restaurants need to be completely forgotten. Does that fat-laden food really taste so good that it is worth dying for? Fast food and obesity could not be correlated more strongly
-
All people need to exercise for a minimum of 154 minutes per week (22 minutes each day). Televisions, video games and the Internet need to be looked at in an entirely different light
-
Stress needs to be looked upon as the killer that it is. It increases the probability for the development and complication of every disease known to mankind;
Obesity facts are very evident to see. The people of the planet are fatter than ever before. Diseases are at all-time high levels. Physical activity levels are at all-time low levels with over 25% of all Americans classified as totally sedentary. People cannot handle the massive loads of stress that they allow themselves to be exposed to.
